Dubs in the UK are just as small minded as dubs the world over

I did it ! I told my JW mother that I am pagan !
by Sirona inyes, i did it.. after the thread in which i asked how i could possibly tell my jw mum that i'm pagan....i decided to take the bull by the horns and tell her.. her reaction made me wonder if she reads this board.. firstly, to "ease" her in, i mentioned that i'm doing a course in reiki.
reiki is a complimentary therapy - basically hands on healing.
well, she said she knew a little about reiki and thought it was a good idea.

Pro Life, pro choice?
by got my forty homey? ini always have felt that the following expressions were stupid, why dont they just call it pro abortion, anti abortion.
anyway, knowing our backgrounds as jw's what is your viewpoint on this highly debated issue?

Personally I am strongly pro choice, for a number of reasons despite finding the concept of abortion distasteful.
I have no right to dictate what a woman can or cannot do to her body and I do not have the right to demand that any woman continue a pregnancy she does not want. I may supply the sperm but I have no rights over the child created until it is born.
There are way too many children brought into the world to parents who are not competant to give them a decent upbringing, some of them do not have the fortitude to put them out to adoption and hence the kids end up being abused or neglected. No child deserves that and to suggest that all life is sacred while sentencing countless children to a woefully destructive childhood is such a breathtakingly circular piece of logic that it stuns me.
Abortion should not be used as a form of birth control, there are plenty of safe and reliable methods of ensuring birth control in this day and age. I find it offensive that certain groups attempt to deny people access to birth control and then deny any responsibility towards the social damage the policy causes, which by the way includes higher incidence of abortion as witnessed by the high numbers of Irish travelling to England for the operation.
Obviously the my last comment is aimed at the Catholic church although I do not wish to cause offence. As an aside, the organisation which provides the largest access to birth control in many developing countries is ironically the Catholic church at a local level who ignore the vatican's policy. -

oh and as an aside, the reason I use supermarket workers as an example is that I worked for Tesco (a bit supermarket chain) as my first job after leaving school.
I cannot understate just how soul crushing it was to think that I could have still been doing the self same job for 20 years or more. -

Shera, one of the reasons I left the dubs was because I was fed up with morons telling me that pursuing further education was a waste of time. I didn't want to be working in Walmart or cleaning windows so I resisted the call to pioneer and stayed at school til I was 18. Unfortunately I didn't have the parental support to go to University at 18 so had to wait 5 years and do my degree as a mature student, believe me it is a damn site harder trying to get back into the habit of studying when you haven't been used to it for 5 years. Now I'm a software engineer and am earning reasonable money but I'm still 5 years behind where I could have been if I had found some way to go to University at 18.
If I were you I would suggest to your teenager that they look at the people working in the local Walmart and tell you if that's all he or she wants out of life. I'm not knocking shop workers at all, just pointing out that limiting your education limits your life choices. Discuss what they want out of life and if they want to travel - there's no way they will ever be able to afford to see the world on a minimum wage salary, let alone own a house and have nice vacations. Money isn't everything, far from it but you sure as hell notice it when you don't have much. I've been on the dole (unemployment) and it's not the most pleasant existence. It's all a question of whether you want to have to continually struggle to make ends meet or whether you would prefer not to have to constantly worrying about where the money will come from if the car breaks down.
And can someone tell me why the hell Mozilla won't let me use paragraphs or any sort of html tags? -

I used to sell Kirby vacuum cleaners, and then double glazing and fitted kitchens from door to door. I found that the practise I got on saturday mornings bullshitting at selling religion gave me the skills to make a good salesman IIRC I heard something recently that they were going to institute a do not call list in the UK too. I hope so!
